Vehicular movement on the busy Ghodbunder Road in Thane city was disrupted for over five hours on Wednesday morning after a truck fell from a flyover, civic officials reported.
The incident occurred around 7:30 am in the Patlipada area when a truck carrying 34 tonnes of chemical was en route from Nhava Sheva to Bawal in Haryana, according to Yasin Tadvi, Chief of the Disaster Management Cell for Thane's civic body.
The truck's driver suffered minor injuries and was swiftly taken to a local hospital. Although locals complained of eye irritation due to the chemical spill, officials assured that the substance (paraformaldehyde) was not severely hazardous. Local firemen and civic rescuers quickly mobilized to clear the road, but traffic heading towards Ghodbunder remained snarled for over five hours. The accident forced many schools to ask parents to arrange alternative transport for their children as school buses were unable to use the affected route. This incident followed another accident that disrupted traffic on the same road for over 11 hours on Tuesday.
