China has accused Canada of engaging in protectionism following Ottawa's decision to impose a 100% tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles. This move mirrors similar tariffs imposed by the United States.
The Chinese Commerce Ministry stated that these tariffs would destabilize global industrial and supply chains, strain economic relations between China and Canada, and harm businesses in both nations.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision follows encouragement from U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Meanwhile, China's Foreign Ministry has urged Canada to avoid politicizing trade issues, highlighting China's advancements in the electric vehicle sector driven by continuous technological innovation.
