The Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair has unveiled a state-of-the-art automated parking system aimed at offering a hassle-free car parking experience for both passengers and visitors. The system features sensor-based boom barriers, CCTV surveillance, and automatic ticket dispensers, according to an official statement.

The Advanced Automated Parking System (AAPS) will minimize the need for manual traffic management and ensure transparent parking tariffs. It employs 'time-stamping' at four strategic locations within the airport premises, enhancing accuracy and accountability for both users and service providers.

Airport Director Devender Yadav highlighted this development as a significant step towards automation and preparation for international flight services from Port Blair. AirAsia is set to launch its first international flight from Port Blair to Kuala Lumpur in November 2024. In addition, a major automation initiative named Digi Yatra, focused on seamless and contactless passenger movement using facial recognition technology, is also in the pipeline. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is overseeing the construction of a new integrated terminal building at an estimated cost of Rs 707.73 Crore. The new facility will span 40,837 sqm. and accommodate up to 1,200 passengers during peak hours, handling approximately 40 lakh passengers annually.
