The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warned that Russia would encounter considerable economic difficulties if the global community, including India, ceased buying its subsidized oil. This statement comes amid ongoing criticism from Western nations regarding India's continued procurement of Russian oil despite imposed sanctions.
Data reveals a significant shift in India's oil imports: from less than one percent before the Ukraine war to almost 40 percent currently. Zelenskyy emphasized Russia's reliance on oil for its economic stability, noting that the nation's economy lacks diversification.
During a bilateral discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the necessity of these imports, citing the tight market conditions caused by widespread sanctions on energy producers. India's argument centers on the importance of keeping oil prices stable for the international economy.
