A bus carrying 43 Indian passengers met with a tragic accident on Friday in Nepal, resulting in the deaths of 21 people and injuring 22 others. The bus plunged into the rain-swollen Marsyangdi river, as confirmed by Shailendra Thapa, spokesperson for Nepal's armed police.
The passengers, all Indian nationals, were traveling from the tourist city of Pokhara to the capital Kathmandu. Roads in this mountainous region are notorious for being narrow and hazardous, making navigation especially difficult for larger vehicles.
Rescue operations have been intensive. Army and police teams used long metal ladders and ropes to pull people from the river. Images showed exhausted women and children on the banks, and rescuers saving a fainting child. Uttar Pradesh, India's neighboring state, is dispatching an official to help coordinate the rescue efforts.
