India and Malaysia have elevated their bilateral relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, following extensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday. The talks focused on enhancing cooperation across several sectors such as trade, investment, and defense.
A key agreement promoting the recruitment and protecting the interests of Indian workers in Malaysia was among at least eight pacts inked by the two sides. The issue of illegal immigration and human trafficking was also addressed.
Modi emphasized the need to expand bilateral trade and investment and highlighted plans to connect India's digital payment system UPI with Malaysia's PayNet. The leaders also agreed on boosting cooperation in new technological areas and the fight against terrorism and extremism.
