In a major development, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Monday that the government is poised to release the much-anticipated draft rules for the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act within the next month.

Speaking to reporters, Vaishnaw emphasized that the government has prioritized the digital implementation of the Act before finalizing the rules. 'We have first worked on the digital implementation of the Act and framed the rules accordingly. The framework is ready, and the draft rules for consultation are expected to be released within a month,' he stated.

The minister also shared that the final draft was reviewed last week and will soon be available for public consultation. The DPDP Act, which secured presidential assent on August 12 last year, has yet to be fully enacted as the notification process for the rules is pending. The digital platform for the Data Protection Board is concurrently being developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), with significant progress reported by the National Information Centre and Digital India Corporation.
