Room to Read India has launched its sixth annual flagship campaign, #IndiaGetsReading, under the theme 'Make Room for Early Learning.' The campaign, which commenced on August 15, will continue until September 8, International Literacy Day.

This year's campaign emphasizes the critical role early learning plays in establishing a solid foundation for both community and economic development. Research indicates that nurturing children during their early years (ages 3-8) is essential for unlocking their full potential. A recent publication by The World Bank highlights that 70% of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries struggle to comprehend simple texts. The India Gets Reading initiative aims to create language-rich environments through diverse early learning activities in primary schools, Anganwadis, and community settings.

Speaking about the initiative, Poornima Garg, Country Director of Room to Read India, stated, 'Reading is a skill that must be intentionally nurtured. Young minds need opportunities to build on their existing language and cognitive abilities. This year, under the 'Make Room for Early Learning' theme, we are committed to uniting communities to create safe spaces for young learners.' The campaign will feature high-impact activities such as Pledge Reading Time and the Read-a-thon, engaging audiences across ten intervention states and beyond.
