On International Literacy Day, Pakistan declared an education emergency to address the critical issue of 26 million out-of-school children in the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced this initiative, urging private sector and civil organisations to join hands with the government to advance the education agenda.

The prime minister reaffirmed his commitment to a more informed and sustainable nation, launching enrolment campaigns, introducing midday meals, and rolling out scholarships and other incentives to reduce dropout rates. Sharif stressed that literacy extends beyond reading and writing, serving as a pathway to empowerment, economic opportunities, and active societal participation.

The government also plans to integrate technology into the educational system, equipping youth with skills necessary for the digital economy. Effective partnerships with private sector and civil societies aim to link education with employment opportunities, fostering a more inclusive workforce. UNESCO highlighted significant global literacy challenges, noting that three out of four children in developing countries cannot read basic texts by age 10.
