EasyJet announced the cancellation of over 200 flights to and from Portugal starting Thursday, as cabin crew based in the country initiated a three-day strike. The industrial action, driven by grievances over working conditions such as rotas and overtime, is disrupting travel at the height of the summer season.

According to the Flight Staff Union SNPVAC, which organized the strike, over 90% of the Portuguese cabin crew participated on Thursday, though EasyJet reported a 73% participation rate so far. The number of cancellations could rise since many flights are scheduled for the afternoon. EasyJet confirmed it had to cancel 232 out of 1,138 flights intended for the three-day strike period.

SNPVAC stated that the strike was triggered by issues such as lack of schedule stability and insufficient staffing, which led to pressure to work overtime. Union representative Ana Dias highlighted the instability, saying, 'The workers are unhappy with the schedules instability. For example, I don't know if I'll be working at 5 a.m. or 5 p.m. tomorrow. I can't even plan my family life around the clock.'

The rise in foreign tourists visiting Portugal by 7.5% between January and June puts further strain on travel during this busy season. The government has mandated minimum services during the strike, covering essential routes to Madeira, Geneva, Luxembourg, and London. EasyJet operates 19 aircraft and employs over 800 people in Portugal.
