Flight operations to and from Kazi Nazrul Islam (KNI) airport in Andal, West Bengal, were abruptly suspended on Friday following substantial water logging in and around its premises, officials reported.
Three flights, including routes from New Delhi and Bengaluru, were canceled due to the weather-induced disruptions. The district experienced approximately 192 mm of rainfall overnight, causing significant operational challenges for the airport. Passengers were informed ahead of time to minimize inconvenience, airport authorities said.
The developer of the airport, Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd (BAPL), issued a statement explaining that the extraordinary rainfall in the Durgapur-Asansol area led to severe water logging. This situation was compounded by a breach in a water reservoir upstream. The flooding has necessitated a temporary suspension of operations, with all relevant authorities informed and on watch.
BAPL, alongside district authorities and local bodies, is actively monitoring the situation and taking steps to ensure the swift resumption of airport services, the statement concluded.
