A small bridge built on a state highway in Arjuni Morgaon taluka of Gondia district, Maharashtra, has caved in, leading officials to divert traffic on the route, they said.
The collapse happened on the Navegaon-Kohalgaon-Keshori Road late Thursday night, with no injuries reported. A passerby alerted authorities, prompting a team to visit the site and reroute traffic via Khairi-Sukdi village, an official confirmed.
The exact cause remains undetermined. The bridge, around five decades old, had weakened due to its outdated construction method and recent heavy rains. Sub Divisional Officer Varunkumar Shahare suggested the rains and vehicle movements further compromised its stability. Public Works Department Deputy Engineer Rajendra Darwade confirmed that a new bridge proposal is sanctioned.
