Save the Jute Sector: MP Ray's Plea to PM Modi Amidst Crisis

Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and address the ongoing crisis in the jute sector. Ray's appeal highlights the plight of millions of farmers and workers affected by the plummeting raw jute prices, which have fallen below the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

In his letter, Ray cites inadequate government procurement of B Twill bags, non-compliance by the sugar industry with mandatory jute packaging norms, and the Ministry of Textiles' apathy as key factors exacerbating the crisis. He emphasized that intervention is critical to stabilize the market and secure livelihoods.

The letter warns that the welfare of an estimated 4 crore farmers and 3.5 lakh jute mill workers, predominantly in West Bengal, depends on prompt action from the PM. The Indian Jute Mills Association also pointed out significant issues during a meeting in New Delhi, noting the industry's operation at just 55% capacity and a projected demand drop for jute bags.
