At least 19 people have died following a boat capsize on a river in northwest Ethiopia, as reported by a state-run media outlet on Sunday. The incident took place in the Amhara region on Saturday when a group of passengers were crossing the Tekeze River, which serves as a border with Eritrea, according to the Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA).
The capsized boat had 26 individuals on board. Rescue operations have so far saved seven people, including a child, while two bodies have been recovered, EPA noted.
This tragic event marks the second major disaster in Ethiopia in recent days. Earlier on Monday, a landslide in the southern part of the country resulted in over 250 fatalities.
