Govt to Develop Vishnupad and Mahabodhi Temples into World-Class Tourist Spots
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced government support for the comprehensive development of the Vishnupad Temple corridor at Gaya and the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in Bihar. Modeled on the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor, these initiatives aim to transform them into world-class pilgrim and tourist destinations while boosting the tourism sector.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday announced government support for the comprehensive development of the Vishnupad Temple corridor at Gaya and the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in Bihar. These initiatives aim to transform them into world-class pilgrim and tourist destinations.
The development projects will be modelled on the successful Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor, Sitharaman revealed.
Vishnupad Temple, one of the oldest Hindu shrines, is located by the Falgu river, while the Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. "Tourism has always been integral to our civilization. Our efforts to position India as a global tourist destination will create jobs, stimulate investments, and unlock economic opportunities," Sitharaman said during her Union Budget 2024-25 speech.
In addition, she announced initiatives for the development of Rajgir and Nalanda in Bihar, emphasizing the religious significance of Rajgir for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains. The government will also support the revival of Nalanda University and the development of Odisha's tourist destinations.
