The government plans to announce the rules for the new Telecom Act within the next 180 days, according to Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindhia. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 theme launch, Scindhia emphasized the importance of a robust firewall to safeguard the country, its citizens, and businesses.

Last year, the central government passed the Telecommunications Act to amend and consolidate laws for the development and operation of telecommunication services. Some provisions of this Act, including government control of public and private telecom services for security, have already become law.

The Minister also highlighted the rapid rollout of 5G and ongoing efforts towards 6G technology. He noted significant investments in telecom equipment, contributing to the Atmnirbhar Bharat initiative by reducing the trade deficit in telecom equipment from Rs 88,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 4,000 crore today.

Regarding BSNL's 4G services, Scindhia revealed that a Performance Management Unit will set daily targets for the rollout. He commended BSNL's choice to develop its own 4G technology, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of India as a supplier of both services and products.

On questions about Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Scindhia assured that operations would be transferred to BSNL, with asset monetization covering liabilities. The government is committed to preventing any defaults.
