Mumbai's Western and Central railways are fully prepped to tackle monsoon disruptions, ensuring over 70 lakh daily commuters experience uninterrupted services, senior officials revealed on Saturday. Through meticulous pre-monsoon work involving tracks, mechanical, signalling, and electrical equipment, the railways are set to smoothly navigate the challenges of the rainy season.
Flood-prone areas were scrutinized via drone surveys, while 651 culverts and 323 km of drains were cleaned and de-silted. High-capacity pumps and automatic rain gauges have been installed in vulnerable zones to gather real-time data and aid in water management, officials confirmed.
The railways are also liaising with civic bodies and state departments to ensure efficient coordination during severe weather. Special measures, such as boulder netting and remote-operated floater cameras, have been introduced to monitor hard-to-access areas of the network. Additionally, a special timetable for high tides and heavy rainfall days has been set to mitigate the risk of flooding.
