The government of Meghalaya is ambitiously aiming to position the state as the 'Silicon Valley' of India's northeastern region through its rapidly developing tech parks. Notably, the Shillong Tech Park Phase-I, located in the New Shillong Township, is thriving at full capacity, providing employment opportunities for over 1,200 individuals in various IT firms and local companies.
Officials state that robust internet connectivity and reliable backup power are key to the project's success, leveraging services from Powergrid Teleservices Ltd and BSNL. The tech park features essential amenities such as a 100-seater auditorium and skilling centres, with expansion plans to accommodate up to 4,000 more IT-trained youth by 2025.
The government is also introducing initiatives like a 'Remote Pilot Training Organisation' to train local youths as drone operators, creating further employment prospects. With a strong youth population and educational infrastructure, the state is poised to attract multinational IT companies, contributing significantly to its goal of doubling the GSDP by 2027-28.
