The study titled "Survey Evidence on Public Support for AI Safety Oversight," published in Scientific Reports, explores public perceptions of AI safety regulation. Conducted in September 2023, this research surveyed 2,864 participants from Germany and Spain, offering a comprehensive view of societal attitudes toward stricter AI oversight. The findings are striking: 62.2% of German respondents and 63.5% of Spanish respondents supported or strongly supported stricter regulation. Risk preferences also played a crucial role. Participants who exhibited higher risk aversion were more likely to support stringent oversight, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding societal interests over unchecked technological progress. Altruistic tendencies further bolstered support, suggesting that individuals with a strong sense of collective responsibility view regulation as a means to protect broader societal welfare.

Job displacement and regulation support

Surprisingly, individuals anticipating significant job displacement due to AI expressed less support for stricter oversight. This counterintuitive result challenges the assumption that those most vulnerable to technological disruption would favor stringent regulation to slow AI's adoption. The study suggests several possible explanations. These individuals may perceive regulatory measures as stifling innovation and reducing economic opportunities, or they might prioritize direct legislative action to address job displacement over broad regulatory frameworks. Cultural and contextual factors significantly shaped public perceptions of AI regulation. The study revealed differences in how skepticism toward new technologies influenced support in Spain and Germany. While skepticism was associated with greater support for regulation in Germany, it had a less consistent impact in Spain. Moreover, participants with greater patience in their time preferences - those willing to delay immediate rewards for long-term benefits—were more supportive of stringent oversight, particularly in Germany. This finding aligns with broader research suggesting that forward-looking individuals are more likely to endorse measures aimed at ensuring long-term societal well-being.
