The Odisha government took a significant step in promoting indigenous sports on Monday, unveiling a three-year sponsorship deal for the Indian national kho kho team. This initiative marks a major investment in a traditional sport, aimed at boosting its prominence on both national and international stages.
Announced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, the deal includes an investment of Rs 5 crore annually from January 2025 to December 2027. Funds will be provided through the Odisha Mining Corporation, totaling Rs 15 crore. This move underscores Odisha's dedication to sports development, reminiscent of its successful hockey endeavors.
The sponsorship will bolster team development, training infrastructure, and competitive participation. As India gears up to host Kho Kho's inaugural World Cup in January, the commitment is expected to enhance athlete capabilities and increase Odisha’s visibility in global sports events.
