The Vatican has unveiled cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence-enabled services for St Peter's Basilica, revolutionizing access to its Renaissance-era wonders. These innovations were announced in anticipation of the Holy Year or Jubilee celebrations slated for 2025, an event occurring every 25 years.
Collaborating with tech giants Microsoft and heritage digitalization experts Iconem, the Vatican launched an interactive website alongside an advanced 3D digital replica of the iconic basilica. Utilizing drones and AI algorithms, a strikingly detailed model was assembled using over 400,000 photographs gathered over four weeks.
The initiative, supported by Pope Francis, aims to extend the basilica's reach globally and engage new audiences. He, however, emphasized ethical AI use, underscoring its role in expanding knowledge while cautioning against potential misuse.
