Meta Platforms Resumes AI Training with Public Content in UK

Meta Platforms will resume training its AI models using public content on Facebook and Instagram in the UK after previously pausing the process. The pause was in response to regulatory concerns, and Meta has now addressed these by improving user notification and objection options. This resumption excludes data from minors and private messages.

Meta Platforms is set to restart the training of its AI models with public content from Facebook and Instagram users in the UK, following a previous suspension due to regulatory issues.

The company announced that only public posts, photos, captions, and comments from adult users will be utilized, explicitly excluding private messages and data from minors under 18. This development comes after Meta paused the AI model launch in Europe after an intervention by the Irish privacy regulator.

Meta has since made revisions to its data use policies, including more straightforward user notification and objection procedures, in compliance with feedback from the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). The decision to resume followed backlash from the advocacy group NOYB, which contested Meta's initial notification methods.
