Portugal Upholds Ban on Chinese Telecom Equipment in 5G Networks

Portugal's center-right government has decided to uphold a ban on Chinese telecoms equipment in its 5G networks, sustaining the policy established by the previous administration. Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz confirmed the commitment to security while emphasizing continuity in governance.

In May 2023, Portugal's CSSC cybersecurity board prohibited the use of Chinese technology, notably from Huawei, in 5G and 4G platforms. This decision hindered Huawei's market ambitions in Portugal. The ban aligns with concerns from Europe and the United States regarding potential security risks posed by Chinese involvement in critical infrastructure.

The economic repercussions of this ban are significant. A report by EY for Huawei estimated the cost to the Portuguese economy at over 1 billion euros. However, Minister Pinto Luz assured that operators would have ample time to transition away from Chinese equipment.
