Taiwan showcased its missile firepower on Tuesday, firing a series of surface-to-air missiles at a highly-sensitive test site located on the island's southeastern coast. Reporters were invited to witness the event.

In response to intensifying Chinese military activities, Taiwan, governed democratically and seen by China as its own territory, has intensified its defense preparations. Missiles from both U.S. and domestic sources are central to Taiwan's strategy.

At Jiupeng base in Pingtung County, the military launched U.S.-made Patriot and Taiwan-made Sky Bow III missiles. A warship stationed nearby fired a RIM-66 Standard missile. "Today's missile launches hit their targets perfectly, showcasing our soldiers' training and the efficacy of our weapons systems," said Defence Ministry spokesperson Sun Li-fang.

During the rare media trip to the base, it was noted that Jiupeng also serves as a key testing ground for new missiles developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, including the longer-range Hsiung Feng, designed for deep strikes in China.

Taiwan continues to reject China's claims on its territory, asserting that only its people can decide the island's future.
