White House Advocates for Open-Source AI Technology
The White House supports open-source artificial intelligence (AI) technology and argues against immediate restrictions. The US Commerce Department is set to make recommendations on managing AI's benefits and risks. The report addresses an ongoing debate between proponents of closed and open AI models.
The White House is advocating for "open-source" artificial intelligence technology, asserting in a report Tuesday that there's no immediate need for restrictions on companies making key components of their powerful AI systems publicly available.
"We recognize the importance of open systems,'' stated Alan Davidson, an assistant secretary of the US Commerce Department, in an interview with The Associated Press.
As part of a comprehensive executive order on AI issued last year, President Joe Biden tasked the US Commerce Department with consulting experts and providing recommendations by July on how to manage the potential benefits and risks of so-called open models.
