Stellantis issued a recall on Thursday for roughly 24,000 Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivans globally due to fire risks. The company has advised owners to park their vehicles outside, away from structures, and to avoid recharging them until a software update is available.

The recall affects Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids from the 2017 to 2021 model years, with about 19,500 vehicles in the United States. Stellantis reported seven fire incidents involving the vehicles, some of which occurred while the vehicles were turned off or recharging, and four customers have reported smoke inhalation symptoms.

The issue has been traced to a rare abnormality in the high-voltage battery cells. Stellantis is developing a software update to detect this issue, and if detected, dealers will replace the high-voltage battery. The recall also covers around 3,000 vehicles in Canada and 1,700 in other countries. Owners are advised not to recharge the vehicles but can continue driving them.
