Dr N Vinod Kumar, the newly appointed chairman of Mormugao Port Authority (MPA), on Tuesday said the authority aims to ensure that cargo handled at the port has minimum impact on the environment. Kumar recently took charge of the Vasco-based port authority.
“The first priority should be development of the port and more importantly, sustainable development,” Kumar told reporters in Vasco.
The port will have to welcome whatever cargo is brought in, but it should leave minimum impact on the environment, he said.
“Every commercial activity we do, impacts the environment. But we will have to see how to minimise it,” Kumar said.
The chairman further said that his plan is to be more economical and lead the port to its past glory.
“We have to maintain ourselves and help the society,” he said, adding that the aim is also to generate more employment without creating an impact on the environment.
Kumar had earlier served as Goa's post master general.
