Mets' Rhame banned for 2 games over violation

New York Mets reliever Jacob Rhame was suspended two games and fined an undisclosed sum for intentionally throwing a pitch near the head of Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins on Tuesday night. Joe Torre, the chief baseball officer for Major League Baseball, made the announcement Thursday.

Rhame threw the pitch -- which went up and behind Hoskins' head -- in the top of the ninth inning of a 9-0 game, won by the Mets, at Citi Field. Hoskins got his revenge off Rhame on Wednesday night when he homered in the ninth inning of a 6-0 Phillies victory. He took a leisurely 34.2-second stroll around the bases, the slowest time recorded since Statcast began clocking it in 2015.

Rhame is eligible to appeal the punishment. If he doesn't appeal, the suspension would begin Friday night when the Mets begin a three-game series at home against Milwaukee.
