Alexander Zverev, ranked No. 2 in the world, has withdrawn from the United Cup mixed teams tennis tournament due to a bicep strain. This decision comes less than two weeks before the Australian Open, raising concerns about his fitness ahead of the Grand Slam event.
Zverev, at 27 years old, had a strong start to the season by winning his first two singles matches at the United Cup. He secured victories over Thiago Monteiro from Brazil and Zheng Zhizhen from China. However, he was set to face Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan in Perth for the quarterfinals.
With Kazakhstan already leading the tie 1-0, Zverev pulled out of the match. Tournament organizers announced that Daniel Masur will take his place for Team Germany. Zverev's quest for a Grand Slam singles title continues, having been a runner-up in the 2020 U.S. Open and the 2024 French Open.
