Payment Delays and Tensions Plague T20 World Cup Aftermath
The ICC is addressing delayed prize money payments from the T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S. and West Indies. The World Cricketers’ Association highlights intimidation by some boards against players demanding their dues. A Global Player Hardship Fund was launched to support vulnerable cricketers.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is actively engaging with several cricket boards that have not yet disbursed prize money from this year's Twenty20 World Cup, sources informed Reuters on Thursday. India emerged victorious over South Africa in the final of the tournament, which took place in June, co-hosted by the U.S. and the West Indies.
On Wednesday, the World Cricketers' Association (WCA) expressed concerns regarding some boards exhibiting 'threatening and intimidatory behaviour' towards player groups over unpaid prize money. A source disclosed to Reuters that the ICC has approached five of the twenty participating national boards to ensure timely payments to players.
WCA CEO Tom Moffat voiced apprehensions about threats against players advocating for their rights. He acknowledged the ICC's efforts in ensuring players receive full payments and emphasized the establishment of a Global Player Hardship Fund to aid international players in need, overseen by JP Van Wyk, the WCA's head of welfare and education.
