Spain's rising tennis star Carlos Alcaraz defied ill health to conquer Russia's Andrey Rublev, keeping his ATP Finals aspirations alive on Wednesday. Alcaraz, who has been battling respiratory issues in Turin, donned pink nasal tape yet managed a commanding 6-3, 7-6(8) victory.
The third seed Alcaraz appeared rejuvenated compared to his earlier group stage defeat against Norway's Casper Ruud. After trading the initial games, Alcaraz broke Rublev's serve with a powerful forehand and swept five consecutive games, taking charge of the encounter.
World number eight Rublev, already defeated by Alexander Zverev in his opening match, struggled to capitalize on key moments in the second set. Alcaraz's resilience shone through in the tiebreaker, where he fended off two set points before clinching the match successfully.
