Australia's head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted at the possibility of Test captain Pat Cummins sitting out the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka. The reason? The Test squad leader is awaiting the birth of his second child. With the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India on the horizon, Australia must swiftly channel its focus back to the Lankan challenge scheduled to commence on January 29 at Galle.

The uncertainty surrounding Cummins' participation stems from his family commitments. McDonald emphasized that the captain's prioritization of family over a Test match won't pose any internal issues. He drew parallels to players Mitch Marsh and Travis Head, who are currently on paternity leave. ESPNcricinfo quoted McDonald saying, "If Cummins chooses to miss a Test to attend to bigger things, the team will fully support him."

Meanwhile, experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell could emerge as a strategic selection, given Sri Lanka's spinner-friendly conditions. Additionally, the Australian attack might benefit from the skills of left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann and young prospect Todd Murphy alongside the veteran Nathan Lyon.

Amidst squad deliberations, the former Australian spinner Steve O'Keefe has advocated for prioritizing red-ball practice for selected spinners, even at the sacrifice of their Big Bash League participation. "For the young bowlers accompanying Nathan Lyon, intensive red-ball preparation is crucial. Sending them over to acclimatize with the red ball ahead of matches should be a priority," O'Keefe commented to ESPNcricinfo.
