Former India cricketer Saba Karim has proposed Nicholas Pooran as a prospective leader for the Lucknow Super Giants, should the franchise decide to part ways with KL Rahul ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). As all 10 franchises gear up to announce player retentions on Thursday, Rahul's position with LSG is in jeopardy after a heated exchange with the franchise owner following a heavy defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad last season.

The rumors surrounding Rahul's departure have gained traction, with recent reports suggesting he may not be part of LSG's plans for the next season. In the event of his departure, a new captain would be required, and Saba Karim sees Pooran, with his widespread leadership experience, as an ideal candidate.

"We might witness a leadership change as Nicholas Pooran has led teams in other leagues," Karim remarked during an exclusive interview on JioCinema. Pooran's impressive 2024 season with LSG included scoring 499 runs across 14 matches with an average of 62.38 and a strike rate of 178.21. However, despite his commendable efforts, LSG failed to secure a playoff position, finishing seventh with seven wins and 14 points. Reports indicate that LSG is likely to retain Pooran, alongside Indian stars Mayank Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi, and uncapped players Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni. Retention costs for these players are undisclosed, but Rs 51 crore will reportedly be deducted from LSG's budget in accordance with IPL retention guidelines.
