Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins playfully turned down David Warner's suggestion of making a return to international cricket, opting instead to focus on developing new talent for the team. Cummins shared these comments during an appearance on 'The Grade Cricketer' Podcast.
Days earlier, Warner had put forth the idea of returning for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, should Australia struggle to find a suitable replacement in the opening position, even after experimenting with Steve Smith in that role. However, Cummins humorously brushed off the notion. 'I spoke with Davey a couple of days ago,' Cummins recalled. 'When he asked, I told him, good luck with Thunder in the Big Bash League this year, but we all look forward to your insights on Fox,' he added.
Cummins noted Warner's fondness for grabbing media attention but reaffirmed that Warner remained retired. The captain also reflected on Australia's past defeats to India, particularly the 2018-19 series loss at home which impacted the team deeply. As anticipation builds for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy beginning November 22 in Perth, Cummins acknowledged the series' critical role in Australia's quest not only to avenge previous losses but also to maintain their chances in the ICC World Test Championship.
