In a significant move, Cricket Australia has lifted the lifetime leadership ban on David Warner, previously placed due to his role in the infamous 2018 sandpaper scandal in South Africa. This decision opens the possibility of Warner captaining the Sydney Thunder in the upcoming Twenty20 Big Bash League season.
The leadership ban was a consequence of the scandal, which also involved Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft. Warner had previously been banned from cricket for one year. However, a three-member review panel found that Warner had met the criteria required to be reconsidered for leadership roles.
The panel was particularly impressed with Warner's respectful and contrite tone, acknowledging his responsibility and expressing extreme remorse for his past conduct. The panel's statement highlighted Warner's behavioral improvements, noting that he no longer provokes opposing teams. Warner, who has announced his retirement from Test and one-day international cricket, will now focus on the T20 format.
