Jean-Louis Gasset Returns to Montpellier as Manager Amid Club’s Struggles
Jean-Louis Gasset is appointed the new manager of Montpellier after the club dismissed Michel Der Zakarian following a poor start to the season. This marks Gasset's third term with Montpellier, a club where he has strong roots. Gasset previously managed Marseille and the Ivory Coast national team.
Jean-Louis Gasset has been appointed as the manager of Montpellier, the Ligue 1 club announced on Tuesday. Gasset's return comes in the wake of a managerial shake-up after Michel Der Zakarian was sacked following a disheartening 5-0 defeat to Olympique de Marseille that left the team at the bottom of the league table.
Gasset steps into the role for the third time, having previously built a strong connection with the club both as a player and a manager. Prior to this role, Gasset had announced his retirement after serving as interim manager at Marseille last season. His first match for this current term will be against Toulouse.
The 70-year-old also brings recent international experience, having managed the Ivory Coast team, from which he was dismissed after their Africa Cup of Nations campaign. However, they managed a turn-around, ultimately claiming victory in the tournament. His appointment aims to steer Montpellier out of its current misfortunes.
