Former England captain Alastair Cook has expressed confidence in Joe Root's potential to become the leading run-scorer in Test cricket, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record of 15,921 runs. Root, at 12,716 runs, trails Tendulkar by 3,205 runs and is currently fifth on the all-time list.
Cook, who was overtaken by Root as England's top run-getter during a Test against Pakistan, commended Root's incredible talent and relentless hunger for runs. In a personal gesture, Cook called Root to congratulate him, having struggled to find the right words for a text message.
Root's form, especially over the past four years, has been outstanding with more than half of his 35 Test centuries scored during this period. Cook considers Root to be the world's best batter currently, with New Zealand's Kane Williamson closely competing for the title.
