Controversy Over Off-Court Coaching Shake-Up in Tennis

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that off-court coaching will be allowed from 2025, a decision stirring controversy among top players in the sport. The ITF, following its annual general meeting, declared the change in a bid to make tennis "fairer and, potentially, more entertaining."

Off-court coaching has been trialed in Grand Slams and on the ATP and WTA tours since 2023. However, world number six Taylor Fritz voiced his disapproval on social media, indicating that such changes might ruin the strategic one-on-one elements crucial to the sport's identity.

Similarly, Denis Shapovalov, a former world number 10, lamented the decision, emphasizing the unique nature of tennis as a solitary battle. Despite player criticism, ITF's Stuart Miller defended the change as beneficial for player development and the management of matches.
