In a candid revelation before the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Australia's cricketing stalwart Steven Smith opened up about the internal dynamics concerning his brief tenure as an opener. Smith shared that teammates Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne "hated" his stint at the top order, preferring the seasoned batter to provide the team security from the middle order.

The decision to drop Smith back to the number four position came after Australia's National Selector, George Bailey, confirmed the move. According to Bailey, both skipper Pat Cummins and head coach Andrew McDonald played crucial roles in the decision, driven by conversations within the squad.

Reflecting on the situation, Smith emphasized his willingness to bat anywhere for the team but admitted that the middle order had always been his ideal position. During his short spell as David Warner's replacement, Smith's performance as an opener raised concerns. Regaining his spot in the middle order, Smith believes he can make his best contributions to the team where he's proven effective previously.
