During the Chennai Test, former Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan was seen biting down on a black strap around his neck while batting. This innovative technique was part of his effort to maintain the correct head position. ESPNcricinfo reported that Shakib's mentor, Mohammad Salahuddin, and the BCB's chief physician, Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, revealed that Shakib devised this method himself to prevent his head from falling over when playing the ball. Previously, he had used a neck brace for the same purpose.

Shakib's head-positioning issues are due to an eye condition diagnosed last year. Ophthalmologists in Chennai, London, Dhaka, and Singapore concluded that he has Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSC), causing fluid buildup under the retina, distorting vision. To ensure optimal sighting of the ball while maintaining proper technique, Shakib has dedicated many hours to perfecting his head position. Dr. Chowdhury confirmed that Shakib's eye is improving.

Shakib attempted to manage this condition using a neck brace before moving to the strap, which is still in a trial phase. He has practiced extensively with it, both in the nets and through shadow batting. Bangladesh batting coach David Hemp noted that Shakib has been using the strap during practice for months, feeling comfortable with it as it aids his head positioning. Shakib's continuous practice, even outside the field, shows his dedication.

Shakib missed several matches due to his eye condition, including some during this year's BPL and Bangladesh's matches against Sri Lanka. After returning to international cricket, he played in various series, including the 2024 T20 World Cup. He played a role in Bangladesh's 2-0 Test series victory against Pakistan and a County Championship match for Surrey but struggled in the Chennai Test.

Questions arose about a potential finger issue affecting his performance. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto defended Shakib's place in the team, emphasizing his hard work and dedication. Selector Hannan Sarkar mentioned that Shakib's finger issue emerged post-match and that his fitness for the Kanpur match would depend on observation. Sarkar added that Shakib might play as a batter if the finger issue affects his performance.
