Former South African cricket captain Graeme Smith reminisced on his early love for cricket and his formative years in the sport while speaking to ANI. He discussed the upcoming third season of the SA20 domestic franchise league, set to start on January 9, and the launch of Schools SA20, an initiative by SA20 and Cricket South Africa (CSA) designed to nurture cricket talent among schoolchildren nationwide.

Smith credited King Edward VII School, his alma mater, for playing a crucial role in shaping his cricket career and those of other international players. He reminisced about South Africa's re-entry into international cricket in 1992. That moment, he said, was a dream come true, inspiring many young boys to aspire to represent their country in cricket. Smith stressed the importance of exposure and opportunities for young talent, which Schools SA20 aims to provide.

As the youngest ever captain of the South African Test team, Smith reflected on his illustrious career, which saw him amass 17,236 runs in 347 matches. Schools SA20 is set to run from September 2024 to March 2025, involving over 370 boys' teams and 200 girls' teams. The competition will include provincial, regional, and national phases, aiming to uncover the next generation of cricket stars. Smith expressed excitement for the upcoming SA20 season, which will feature top international stars and South African talents, aiming for a competitive and thrilling league.
