England's stand-in Test captain, Ollie Pope, has addressed the mounting criticism over his inconsistent performances since his debut in 2018. Known for his fluctuating form, Pope has struggled to find consistency, averaging just 7.50 in four innings during the first two Tests against Sri Lanka, with three single-digit scores. Over three matches against Sri Lanka, Pope managed to score 191 runs at an average of 31.83, largely bolstered by a strong first inning in the final Test.

Pope's resurgence came too late, failing to secure a win, but his performance was a spectacle for fans. Before this innings, cricket pundits had criticized his poor form. In his post-match presentation, Pope mentioned, 'Been a fair few voices, so nice to block that out and put a score together. Unfortunately, not in a winning cause, but pleased with how I dealt with the noise.'

Despite Pope's valiant effort, England faced a disappointing loss as Pathum Nissanka led Sri Lanka's 219-run chase. Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, and Asitha Fernando's exceptional bowling had earlier left England in tatters, restricting them to 156 and nullifying a 62-run first-innings lead England held. England's bowlers, Gus Atkinson, Chris Woakes, Olly Stone, and debutant Josh Hull, failed to replicate Sri Lanka's tenacity, showing visible signs of fatigue. Reflecting on the series, Pope credited his team's hard work and acknowledged areas for improvement, saying, 'Credit to Gus and Chris, six from six this summer, back-to-back Tests are difficult for the fast bowlers. We've got some good learnings. Credit to SL, they've pushed us throughout.'
