Former Australian batter Ian Chappell has raised concerns over the performance of England's number three batter, Ollie Pope. According to Chappell, Pope's capable captaincy is overshadowed by his inconsistent batting. Despite showing promise, his substantial contributions have been limited to home conditions, particularly at The Oval.

Pope, standing in as captain for the three-match series against Sri Lanka in place of Ben Stokes, is under pressure following lackluster performances abroad. He has managed only 191 runs in six innings with an average of 31.83, most of which came from a single knock of 154 at The Oval.

Chappell highlighted Pope's technical flaws and skittishness, which make him susceptible to Australian bowlers. He emphasized that England lacks depth for the number three spot and a backup captain, making Pope's improvement vital for the upcoming 2025-26 Ashes tour. In the third Test, England was bowled out for 325, led by Pope's 154, but Sri Lanka fought back, highlighting England's vulnerabilities.
