Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic secured an unprecedented fourth Vuelta a Espana title on Sunday by maintaining his overall lead in the final stage, a 24.6 km individual time trial in Madrid, won by Stefan Kung.

Roglic, riding for Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, overturned Australian Ben O'Connor's earlier lead with a powerful solo attack during stage 19. The Slovenian rider's performance saw him join Spaniard Roberto Heras as the only four-time winners of the Vuelta.

The victory was a particular triumph for Roglic, who had to withdraw from the Tour de France after crashing twice. Dominating three consecutive Vueltas from 2019, Roglic's latest win came despite a strong challenge from O'Connor, who had taken the red jersey early in the race. The Tokyo Olympic gold medallist ended the race with a time just 31 seconds slower than stage winner Kung.
