Para high jumper Sharad Kumar has achieved his second Paralympic medal at the Paris Games amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Kumar, who secured silver in the T63 category, has not met his Ukrainian coach Nikitin Yevhen for over two years due to the conflict.

The 32-year-old Kumar cleared 1.88m while his compatriot Mariyappan Thangavelu earned bronze with a 1.85m leap. Despite the war, Yevhen, based in Kharkiv, has been guiding Kumar online. The war has significantly impacted both Kumar and Yevhen, yet their remote collaboration led Kumar to his medal success.

Sharad Kumar, who trained in the Philippines before the Paris Games, expressed deep emotional and mental struggles due to the ongoing conflict. Despite these challenges, he excelled in his sport, showing the world the true art and competitive nature of athletics. His performance is a testament to his dedication and the indispensable support from his coach.
