Alpine Triumph: Kilian Jornet Conquers 82 Peaks in 19 Days

Ultra-trail runner Kilian Jornet has successfully linked 82 of the Alps' 4,000-meter peaks across Switzerland, France, and Italy in just 19 days, marking the latest remarkable achievement in his storied career. The 36-year-old Spaniard covered 1,207 km and gained a total elevation of 75,344 meters through running, mountaineering, climbing, and cycling.

The project, aptly named 'Alpine Connections,' was divided into 16 rigorous stages over the course of 19 days, including a day of rest. Jornet's daily journey averaged 17 hours, with 87% on foot and the remaining 13% on a bike. This effort shattered the previous record set by Swiss climber Ueli Steck, who took 62 days to complete the same challenge in 2015.

Beginning his journey on August 13 in Switzerland, Jornet tackled peaks such as Piz Bernina and Weissmies. He moved through the Valais region and later ascended some of the highest peaks in the Mont Blanc massif, including Mont Blanc itself. A bike stage connected Italy's Gran Paradiso National Park to France's Parc National des Ecrins, where he climbed Dome de Neige des Ecrins and Barre des Ecrins.

With an average of 16 hours of activity and five hours of sleep daily, Jornet's undertaking required immense physical, technical, and mental stamina. A dedicated support team managed logistics, food, equipment, and content creation, highlighting the meticulous planning that spanned over six months.

'This project has been incredible. It's one of the most challenging things I've ever done,' Jornet stated. 'Staying in total concentration for 20 days was tough but amazing. I'm proud of what we've achieved.' Jornet's impressive resume also includes records for the fastest ascent and descent of both the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, alongside victories in numerous long-distance trail races.
