Iga Swiatek and Daniil Medvedev, the last two former champions left in the U.S. Open singles draws after a series of upsets, breezed into the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
Top seed Swiatek, who claimed the title two years ago, displayed her all-court prowess in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Russia's Liudmila Samsonova, opening the evening session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She noted her improving rhythm as she settled into the tournament.
Earlier, Medvedev, the 2021 champion, efficiently dispatched Portugal's Nuno Borge 6-0, 6-1, 6-3, despite a delay caused by a fire alarm in the building housing the Hawkeye line-calling system. Both players are poised for their upcoming quarter-final matches.
