Al-Ittihad has signed Steven Bergwijn from Ajax Amsterdam for over 21 million euros. The 26-year-old winger's move offers significant financial flexibility to Ajax, whose contract was valid until June 2027. Bergwijn, who joined Ajax from Tottenham Hotspur in 2022, has represented the Netherlands 35 times.
Al-Ittihad has completed the signing of winger Steven Bergwijn from Ajax Amsterdam, according to announcements from both clubs on Monday. The Saudi Pro League team will pay over 21 million euros ($23.25 million) for the 26-year-old, whose existing contract with Ajax was set to run until June 2027.
Bergwijn moved to Ajax from Tottenham Hotspur in July 2022 for 31.25 million euros, making it the most expensive transfer in Eredivisie history. Ajax technical director Alex Kroes revealed that the winger was always open to a move abroad if a good offer surfaced, and this transfer provides the club with much-needed financial flexibility for a new acquisition.
The Dutch international has a decorated history, having won the Eredivisie title three times with PSV Eindhoven between 2015 and 2018. He has also represented the Netherlands national team 35 times, scoring eight goals since his debut in October 2018 in a 3-0 Nations League win over Germany.
