Jessica Pegula, Karolina Muchova, and Jack Draper secured their places in the U.S. Open quarter-finals with straight sets victories, as a fire alarm caused a brief interruption in play on Monday at Flushing Meadows.
On the United States' Labor Day, American Pegula achieved a seamless 6-4 6-2 win over Russia's Diana Shnaider, paving the way for a showdown with either top seed Iga Swiatek or Liudmila Samsonova. Injured earlier this year, Pegula marked a strong return by winning a U.S. Open tune-up in Canada last month and expressed confidence in her game heading into the second week of the Grand Slam.
Muchova, who also remains undefeated in sets, dispatched Italian fifth seed Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-3. Meanwhile, Britain's Draper defeated Tomas Machac 6-3 6-1 6-2 to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final. In another match, fifth seed Daniil Medvedev overcame a brief delay due to a fire alarm to end Nuno Borges' run with a 6-0 6-1 6-3 triumph, setting up a potential clash with either Jannik Sinner or Tommy Paul.
