Following Sri Lanka's disappointing loss to England in the second Test match, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva acknowledged that the visitors tried to control the game but fell short. England's 190-run victory at Lord's secured them a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Speaking after the match, Dhananjaya de Silva highlighted the struggles of Sri Lanka's top batting order. 'We had two days to bat. The message was to bat simple and bat long. They always put pressure on us with their batting; we controlled a bit but that's not good enough to win a Test match in England,' Dhananjaya commented.
Regarding Kamindu Mendis's performance, de Silva noted that the all-rounder excelled in every innings except the second one. 'He's been awesome in every innings except the last innings here. He's getting runs very quickly batting at seven. We have to do better to get a win in England against this quality side,' he added.
Despite a fighting 74 runs from Kamindu Mendis, Sri Lanka managed just 196 runs in their first innings. England, in response, posted a massive 427 runs with significant contributions from Root and Gus Atkinson. Asitha Fernando was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, taking five wickets.
In the second innings, Sri Lanka showed better control with the ball, limiting England to 251 runs. However, in the run-chase of 483, Sri Lanka fell short despite three half-centuries. England's Atkinson shined with the ball, taking five wickets and earning the 'Player of the Match' award.
